Answering your questions on charge points

Q. What’s the difference between a tethered and untethered unit?

Tethered chargers have a fixed cable in the charger which you can’t remove, whereas untethered chargers have a Type 1 or Type 2 socket to plug your charging cable into. This means you can unplug the cable from the charger when your charging’s finished.

Q. Is my home eligible for a home charging point?

In general, if you have off-street parking, your electricity meter isn’t too far from where you’d like your EV charger installed, and there are no groundworks required, you should be eligible. Head to the Egg website to try their free eligibility checker. Or get in contact with British Gas.

Q. Will I need to have a dedicated parking space?

Yes, homes need to have designated, private off-street parking directly linked to the home. You wouldn’t be able to install a charge point if it means running cables across frequently used pathways because of safety concerns.

Q. If I don’t own my home, can I have a charger?

If you’re renting or own a leasehold, you’ll need to get permission from the landlord or freeholder before getting a home charge point installed.

Q. Can a charger be installed in a flat or apartment?

If you have shared parking, rather than your own dedicated parking space, we’re unable to install a charge point for you right now. Generally, if you live in high-rise apartments or flats you don’t own the wall the charger will be mounted on, which is what can stop you being eligible.

Q. How long does it take to install electric car charging points?

If you’re purchasing through British Gas - After your Virtual Home Check is completed, it usually takes around 2-4 weeks for your charge point to be installed as we’ll need to get permission from the DNO. Once approved, standard installations usually take 2 hours, but this depends on the home.

If you’re purchasing through Egg - Once you’ve selected your preferred install date, the majority of installs take around 4 hours. Some non-standard installs may take a little longer, but this will be outlined before any work starts.

Q. What’s the DNO and how long do they take to approve applications?

The DNO stands for the Distribution Network Operators. They’re licensed to distribute electricity in the UK and own the electrical services powering your home.

They have 10 business days to respond to the application. If the DNO need to investigate more before approving, they’ll need to contact you directly to chat through more details.

When choosing Egg as your charge point installer, they will take care of the DNO process on your behalf – meaning you’ve got one less thing to worry about.

Q. Can I cancel my order?

If you’re purchasing through British Gas - yes, you’ll have a “cooling off” period, so you’ll be able to cancel the agreement as long as it’s before the installation has been completed.

If you’re purchasing through Egg - Yes, you’ll have a “cooling off” period, during which you’ll be able to cancel the agreement, provided you haven’t waived this right to get a quicker install and it’s before the installation has been completed.

Q. What’s not included?

If you’re purchasing through British Gas the below information is what is not included.

Costs conducted by the DNO that aren’t included in a standard install. For example:

  • Installation of an isolator switch if you’re not a British Gas energy customer (regulator OFGEM needs energy supplier or DNO to complete)

  • Upgrading the main fuse (DNO needs to complete as it owns the local network)

  • Upgrading network infrastructure (DNO needs to complete as it owns the local network)

Additional work could include:

  • Earth Bonding

  • Replacing the main consumer unit

  • Groundworks, such as connecting cables to external buildings

If you’re purchasing through Egg, they cover these costs.

Q. Are electric car charging points free?

Most public charge points are now paid for – you can find them in places like supermarkets, car parks, shopping centres, National Trust locations and hotels.

Some workplaces may offer free charging while you’re at work. According to Zap-Map there are currently 3,961 free chargers in UK as of November 2022. However, many often find that charging at home is cheaper and more convenient. for instance you can take advantage of a competitive EV tariff to save money by charging overnight. Check out our recommended suppliers Egg and British Gas to find out more.

Q. Can I install my own electric car charging point?

You’ll need a qualified electrician to fit your home charging point. Why not get it installed by Egg or British Gas? You’ll have complete peace of mind with Egg thanks to their on-going support and repair or replace promise. Or, 3 years’ warranty with 24/7 warranty support with British Gas.

Q. Can you charge an electric car from a normal socket?

Yes, you can charge from a normal 3-pin socket. It’s much slower than a specialised home car charging point, but it can be a more convenient option if you’re away from home.

If you are charging from a socket, make sure you plug it straight into the wall. You shouldn’t use an extension lead, as this can be dangerous. Or you can save money by having a car charging point installed at home by the RAC and British Gas.

Q. How much does it cost to install an EV charger at home in the UK?

The RAC have teamed up with Egg and British Gas to make installing electric car charging points easy and affordable. With Egg you can get a fully installed EV charger along with Egg Plus, their complete peace of mind repair or replace promise from £864 or £24 a month for 36 months. Or with British Gas home charge points start from £939 for untethered charge points (which require a separate cable) and from £1,034 for tethered (where the cable is built into the charging points). Costs as of 16.01.2024.

Q. How do you install a car charging point at home?

It’s best to have car charging points installed professionally. We’ve partnered with Egg and British Gas to help make it easy and affordable to install a home charge point. Remember you’ll need off-street parking and permission to install a charge point if you don’t own your home (e.g. if you’re renting).
