Electric vehicles are key to helping clean our urban air, reduce our dependence on foreign fossil fuels, and move us towards cheaper renewable energy for all.

But there are forces that don't want EVs. Forces that are pushing back against the energy transition and trying to discredit both electric cars and renewable electricity. Every day, we see another anti-EV story in the national media, which is then amplified many thousands of times on social media. Myths and disinformation are putting ordinary drivers off electric cars. 

Europe, America and China are forging ahead with EVs, but Britain has fallen behind. The Government needs to do more to support and promote EVs to help attract trillions in global investments for a new energy industry in this country. That means helping to make EVs and charging more affordable, building a charging infrastructure so drivers can be confident of life with an electric car, and having clear long-term industrial policies to encourage global green investment. I've started the FairCharge campaign to make sure this happens.

Electric cars and vans are the beginning of the process of transitioning from polluting fossil fuels to renewable energy - a once-in-a-generation opportunity to stop burning hydrocarbons.

If we are going to increase EV uptake, then we need to have far-sighted government policies that help make EVs accessible to everyone. We need the Government to make sure that:

• There are enough EV chargers across the whole country, easily accessed at an affordable price
• Those who can’t charge at home are not penalised by paying four times as much VAT as those who charge at home
• More incentives like cutting VAT on new EVs but also supporting the second-hand market with VAT cuts where 80% buy their cars.
