Reporting a litter issue

We are responsible for cleaning up litter on streets and public open spaces and we look into all the issues reported to us.

Use this form to report:

  • A fuel spillage from a car (small amount)
  • Leaves gathering in an area
  • Litter gathering in an area
  • An overflowing litter bin
  • Nitrous oxide canisters

Please answer all the questions in our online form as clearly and accurately as you can to help us to deal with the issue you are reporting.

About litter issues

Our Street Cleansing Service provides a range of services and works hard to keep Bury clean and tidy. Tasks include:

  • Litter picking
  • Emptying litter bins and dog waste bins
  • Road and footway sweeping
  • Pressure washing
  • Removal of fly tipping
  • Area deep cleaning to remove litter, leaves, detritus and weeds

The Street Cleansing Service is complemented by volunteers and community groups that organise community clean-ups and carry out litter picking in their local areas.

Other organisations, including schools, colleges and the Highways Agency also have a duty to keep their land clear of litter.

Cleaning up litter costs us, schools, colleges and the Highways Agency a lot of money that could be used to support other public services if more people disposed of litter more responsibly.

Litter picking groups

There are several volunteer litter picking groups across the Bury area all dedicated to keeping Bury clean. Litter picking groups are friendly and inclusive, joining one is also a great way to meet new people and socialise.

Littering: Fixed penalty notice

Dropping litter (including food waste, cigarette butts or chewing gum) is an environmental offence. This offence can lead to a fine.

A fixed penalty notice will be issued if one of our officers has witnessed that someone has committed an environmental crime.

You might be prosecuted and have to pay more if you do not pay your penalty on time.
