About us

Hurtigruten is one of the world’s great journeys, sailing and caring for the Norwegian coast since 1893. We are proud to be a national icon for generations of Norwegians and to have a special place in the hearts of our guests from around the world. Our Original voyages connect 34 coastal communities. It is the classic way to travel the Norwegian coast as a local and has rightly become known as ‘The World’s Most Beautiful Voyage’. To mark our 130-year anniversary, we launched an exclusive range of Signature cruises. These premium sailings showcase our favourite places of Norway’s coast with several hours spent in each port. Along with HX and Hurtigruten Svalbard, we are part of Hurtigruten Group, the global leader in sustainable, inspirational adventure travel, employing more than 2,400 staff and crew from over 50 nationalities.

This year’s World Earth Day mission is to reduce the use and production of plastics 🌎  💡 Hurtigruten fact: The Coastal Express became the first cruise line to remove single-use plastics back in 2018. Plastic items like straws, cups, pens, keychains and bags were replaced with biodegradable or long-lasting alternatives. We’ve also moved away from single-use butter packets 🧈 What swap are you making this year to reduce plastic use? Let us know in the comments 👇🏼 https://ow.ly/HMBz50RkYJv #EarthDay #Hurtigruten

It’s official: A Hurtigruten Astronomy Voyage is 𝘵𝘩𝘦 way to experience the Northern Lights during the upcoming solar maximum, not least because there is so much more to Norway than its unique nightlife. It was such a pleasure to be joined by Cosmopolitan’s Sophie Leen for the trip of a lifetime, from the cute shops in Tromsø to the adorable huskies in Kirkenes.

This is how you should see the Northern lights in 2024 and 2025

We serve 5,200 meals a day on our ships, where does the food waste go? 🍌 Today, we’re taking another big step in our journey towards achieving Zero Edible Food Waste from our fleet operations.  Through a new circular economy initiative, we’ve built a closed-loop system where waste is repurposed to support local food production along the Norwegian coast.  How? It happens in three simple yet impactful steps.  🍊 Step 1: It all starts with sorting edible food waste onboard the Original Coastal Express.  ⚙️ Step 2: The waste is transported to Stamsund harbour during scheduled stops, where a state-of-the-art compost reactor converts it into nutrient-rich compost.  🌱 Step 3: The compost is transported to Myklevik Gård, a sustainable farm in Lofoten located between the sea and mountains. The team uses the compost to grow vegetables and herbs for Norway’s Coastal Kitchen, closing the loop!    From farm, to ship, to farm again, we’re putting the mission of zero food waste at the heart of what we do. This system exemplifies circular economy principles, aiming to foster positive change along the Norwegian coast and beyond. 📷 @thesecountryroads & Kristian Dale #Hurtigruten #FoodWaste #SustainableTravel #CircularEconomy

Why 2024 & 2025 is the best time to see the Northern Lights 👇🏼 Solar physicists like the Norwegian Space Agency's Pål Brekke predict the Solar Maximum in 2024-25 will result in the most frequent and impressive Northern Lights displays in more than a decade. 1️⃣ More auroras: Being at the peak point of our Solar Cycle means you'll likely see the Northern Lights more often. The next Solar Maximum isn't for another 11 years. Are you willing to wait that long? 2️⃣ Dazzling colours: Because of the Solar Maximum, displays of the Northern Lights in this period will often be more vibrant and dynamic, perhaps even with those rare red, pink, and purple hues. 3️⃣ Longer promise: We've just extended our Northern Lights Promise for 2024-25 season. The policy now starts in mid-September rather than October, so you can feel confident about ticking off this bucket-list experience. The Hurtigruten Foundation is a regular supporter of beach clean ups organised by Aktiv i Friluft along Svalbard's coastlines and beaches 🌊 Pictured here is a recent operation where approximately 80 volunteers arrived by boat to the areas of the archipelago that are usually inaccessible to clean. The clean-ups covered a total of 61,8 km of coastlines and more than 10 tons of plastic waste and marine litter was removed. The volunteers also saved the lives of 3 reindeer in Haukebukta that had gotten their antlers entangled in ghost nets 🦌 The Hurtigruten Foundation continues to support the important clean-up efforts of Aktive i Friluft, and you can learn more here 👉🏼 https://ow.ly/Ltwg50R7gqf Image 1 Credit: Timo Virmavirta Image 2 Credit: Aktiv i Friluft Image 3 Credit: Anja Charlotte Markussen Image 4 Credit: Aktiv i Friluft #Svalbard #BeachClean #WorldEarthMonth #HurtigrutenFoundation
